Triumphant Return to Action for Kaya FC–Iloilo

JPV Marikina 0-3 Kaya FC–Iloilo
August 5, 2018
PFF National Training Center, Carmona

Kaya FC–Iloilo returned to winning ways on Sunday afternoon after dispatching of JPV Marikina, 3-0, at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona.

“Coming from two defeats and a long break, I think this was a very positive result. We really needed this,” said Kaya FC–Iloilo Head coach Noel Marcaida.

Just as in their most recent encounter, Iloilo enjoyed a hot start, effectively putting the game beyond reach in the opening period.

“The key to the game was we were able to establish the tempo early and score two goals within 10 minutes,” said Marcaida.

Miguel Tanton opened the scoring just five minutes into the game when his looping free kick sailed over the crowd of players in the Marikina box, and behind the opposition goalkeeper, who misjudged the flight of the ball.

The lead was doubled in fortuitous fashion just two minutes later. Given room to fire at the edge of the box, Antonio Ugarte unleashed a shot that deflected off Alfred Osei’s back and into the net.

With the match well under control, Kaya pushed the result beyond doubt right before half time, with Robert Lopez Mendy confidently smashing a penalty into the top corner. The origin of the spot kick was equally impressive. Connor Tacagni blocked an attempted clearance, kept the ball from going out, then raced into the box before getting bundled over to earn the penalty.

The second half was a display of control from Kaya, as they effectively blanked JPV to earn a fourth clean sheet of the season—their first since May 12.

“The desire of the players was what impressed me the most. They really wanted to win the game so we can stay on track in securing second spot,” said Marcaida.

Named Man of the Match, Miguel Tanton credited the hard work in training for the team’s impressive return to winning ways.

“It all stems from the last two weeks, just getting down and working hard, and I think that’s what came to blossom today,” he said. “They’re a confident side, and they keep possession well. We knew that from the start and we exploited them on the counter attack.”

The result solidified Kaya FC–Iloilo’s hold on second in the standings, improving the club’s total to 36 points from 20 matches—four points clear of nearest rival Davao Aguilas, who have played two games more.
