Rizal Memorial Stadium — Two title contenders met in a crucial early-season test as Kaya FC–Iloilo faced defending champions Manila Digger FC in a tightly contested encounter. Kaya started brightly and stood firm through sustained pressure, but a late set-piece goal proved decisive in a heartbreaking 1–0 defeat.
Kaya nearly made an immediate breakthrough in the second minute. Antoine Ortega’s low cutback found no teammate in the box, but Seong-Jin Kim won possession amid the ensuing scramble and drove into the area before slipping a pass to Fitch Arboleda at point-blank range, only for Digger goalkeeper Omar Njie to deny the effort.
The early pressure continued as Ortega was brought down in the sixth minute, earning Digger captain Modou Joof an early yellow card. From the resulting free kick, Kim sent a high ball into the area, where Eric Esso drifted dangerously towards the far post, forcing Njie to intervene.
Kaya continued to find openings through quick combinations. In the 10th minute, Justin Peña found space at the edge of the box and got a shot away, though the effort lacked the power to trouble the opposing keeper. The opening quarter-hour belonged largely to Kaya, who kept the defending champions on the back foot but could not quite capitalize on their early pressure.
Manila Digger gradually settled into the contest, enjoying a sustained spell of possession around the 20-minute mark. Kaya remained dangerous on the break and through set pieces, with Mike Ott sending a lofted pass into the box for Arboleda to head off target in the 22nd minute. Three minutes later, Ott tested Njie directly from a free kick, but the goalkeeper was equal to it.
As the half progressed, Kaya dropped into a mid-block and stayed compact defensively, limiting space for Digger’s wide attackers and crowding the penalty area whenever the champions threatened. Despite earning several set pieces of their own, Kaya could not find the breakthrough on the other end. Digger’s clearest chance of the first half came just before the interval, when Boubacar Tourray’s header struck the post.
Kaya had a dangerous chance of their own shortly after the restart. In the 47th minute, Esso headed the ball down into a dangerous area for Martini Rey, but the striker could not make the necessary contact to turn it goalward. Digger responded with a quick counterattack, with Tourray finishing the move with a shot that Patrick Deyto coolly denied.
The game remained physical and closely contested, with neither side able to establish control for long. Rey tried his luck from distance in the 51st minute, but his ambitious effort drifted wide. Six minutes later, Deyto produced another excellent save to keep the score level after Digger threatened on the counter once again.
As the match wore on, Digger increased the pressure and began to stack up set-piece opportunities, testing Kaya’s resilience in dead-ball situations. Deyto continued to stand tall, making another important stop in the 80th minute as the champions searched for a winner. Kaya remained disciplined and looked capable of holding on for a hard-earned point.
That prospect disappeared in the closing moments. Peña received a yellow card in the 88th minute for a professional foul to stop yet a quick Digger counterattack. With regular time running out, the champions executed a clever set piece that found Tourray unmarked behind Kaya’s defensive line. The forward finished past the otherwise outstanding Deyto to snatch all three points at the death.
Despite Deyto’s superb performance and a disciplined defensive display for much of the match, Kaya were left empty-handed. In a contest that offered little to separate the two sides, one decisive set piece proved the difference.
